Adjusting to life's changes with hope… through poetry, haiku, and commentary

Be Still and Know

What other creation
can boast that they feel a hair
on their tongue then remove it?

What other creation
can feel the presence of sleep
in their eye then remove it?

What other creation
can sense a drop of chocolate
in the corner of one’s mouth
then remove it?

What other creation
can have a thought and move
it from mind to a form of
expression?

Apes don’t write poems or play
Hamlet. Fish don’t direct films
or want Chinese take-out.

What other creation
can boast that they have rejected
the God who made them?

Cats don’t drive cars but know
their Maker. Lions don’t go to
college but know who God is.

What other creation
can boast about ambition or
greed? Or prolific lying, stealing,
murdering, abuse, and the
like for selfish gain?

None. Not in the animal kingdom.
Only in the kingdom of humankind.

“And, behold, the Lord passed by,
and a great and strong wind tore
the mountains and broke in pieces
the rocks before the Lord, but the
Lord was not in the wind. And after
the wind an earthquake, but the
Lord was not in the earthquake.
And after the earthquake a fire,
but the Lord was not in the fire.
And after the fire the sound of a
low whisper.”

“Be still, and know that I am God.”
