I’m less than halfway through “Bonhoeffer” by Eric Metaxas. I may have started reading this book a year ago or so! I don’t get to read at lunch as much as I used to when I lived in Arizona. These days, when I read this book I must confess and say with fear that I’m less transported back to Nazi Germany while reading a great historical novel than I am seeing Nazi Germany ported to the here and now—in our world today—or in my thought life, at least.
I am slowly working my way through chapter ten, “The Church and the Jewish Question,” very slowly. After all, how much can you read in the time it takes to eat a sandwich or to slurp a bowl of noodles? In 1933, the Nazis worked to legally keep Jews from state institutions and later from all cultural and entertainment activities. Nazi thinking prevailed at all levels of society to not allow Jews to work, own, or live in Germany as they had previously. And sadly, the church entered the struggle without agreement or a clear plan. Probably not fair for me to say “sadly,” as there is a difference between reading about history and living it. But I am concerned about the church now and the re-emergence of thinking and a culture that is vehemently against God and the Truth of God’s Word.
Please note that the purpose of this post is not to deny or prevent what is coming, but rather, to inform and persuade those who believe in the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the Father of Our Lord and Messiah Jesus Christ to stand firm in their faith and not be deceived. And, nothing negative about present day Germany is implied. I love Germany, the German people, and the German language. I studied German in the Army and was stationed in Germany for two three-year tours. The Lord knows I would have remained there if it were possible! This is simply an applied history lesson.
“Freedom” doesn’t seem the same to me anymore. “Peace” isn’t the same either. Freedom and peace may exist, but it is led by what or whom I’m not sure (the self-appointed competent elite?) but has become a technocracy where the power and use of data, information, and social media drive, manipulate, and facilitate the control of the masses, e.g., the world—quickly, sometimes instantly.
The Truth of the Gospel and God has been pushed out, eliminated, or minimized at most levels of governments, colleges, universities, schools, corporations, businesses, and churches in the world today.
Are you offended because I included churches here? Don’t be. Francis A. Schaeffer said this about the church and their response to what is to come in his book “How Should We Then Live?” in the chapter on “Our Society.”
Much of the church is no help here either, because for so long a large section of the church has only been teaching a relativistic humanism using religious terminology.
Schaeffer published this in 1976 and sadly it is more true today than ever. So many churches have embraced the current world view and have forgotten the truths of the gospel and its eternal view. The words of the likes of Bormann, Goebbels, Heydrich, Himmler and others of the Nazi elite created the basis for “Nazi theology” and the Kirchenkampf (the war against the churches). Doesn’t that mirror what is being said and done today? “Political Correctness” dictates that Islam worldwide not be offended; but Christians, Jews, and Israel are targets of opportunity without exception at all levels of government and society.
Greed, power, and lying have a choke hold on absolute truth replacing it with arbitrary truth with which to manipulate the masses. Lying has become acceptable sin, a cancer of the heart, mind, and soul in the absence of God. As the Nazis legally bared Jews from the world then, the world elite today legally bar God across the globe convincing millions to embrace the lie and not the truth.
The concept of freedom is covered with a thin hard veneer of fear that most people don’t address or admit. But most people live in fear. We just live with it. Who can you trust? Who tells the truth? Who is watching or listening? The Judeo-Christian ethic that formed the foundations of our freedom and peace have fallen away. Without God, there is no real freedom or peace. There is less civility and more hatred in the world today than ever before. The world is doing everything it can to promote a false peace embedded with fear to justify the transition to authoritarian rule—a one world government—to make it less painful for humankind when it comes. This is manipulation at its finest. It is coming.
As I write this post, the subject of Climate Change comes to mind. It is a paper tiger without an ounce of truth, impact, or importance in the scope of eternity. Our children have been brainwashed to embrace and fight for a deceit promoted by the elite. Climate change will have no impact on the world when weighed against the knowledge of eternal things. We know the beginning and the end of the earth. God created the universe, as stated in Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” And in the book of Revelation 21:1-4, the Apostle John states
Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
So, clearly the universe is fully in God’s control as is what will happen to the universe. Humankind is not God; climate change is an issue for God, not Man.
Francis A. Schaeffer said this about society in the same chapter and book mentioned earlier:
Here is a simple but profound rule: If there are no absolutes by which to judge society, then society is absolute. Society is left with one man or an elite filling the vacuum left by the loss of the Christian consensus which originally gave us form and freedom in northern Europe and in the West.
So then, in a society that has rejected God, what is the basis for Truth? Or Freedom? Or Peace? Lies and deceit prevail because it is accepted and expected behavior. The concept or practice of Trust is “old school” and fades away. Keep in mind that deceit isn’t a total lie because it may have a smidgen of truth in it. Deceit is more ominous; it is a purposeful lie with an agenda or intention to deceive.
The lie prevailed in the Germany of WWII as it was being purged of “un-German” thoughts. The world of today is being purged of core “un-Christian” and “un-Jewish” thoughts.
To quote the author of “Bonhoeffer” on page 162:
In 1821, in his play Almansor, the German poet Heinrich Heine wrote the chilling words: “Dort, wo man Bücher verbrennt, verbrennt man am Ende auch Menschen.” Heine was a German Jew who converted to Christianity, and his words were a grim prophecy, meaning, “Where books are burned, they will, in the end burn people, too.” That night across Germany his books were among those thrown into the crackling flames. Sigmund Freud, whose books were also burned that night, made a similar remark: “Only our books? In earlier times they would have burned us with them.”
History has shown that in WWII we (I am a Jew) were burned. Is this symbolic of our present day and no one can see it, or is it yet to come? No, it is here. The full force of which is yet to come.
Innocent humankind are being “burned” every day in one form or another, in one country or another. When a school child is openly bullied and abused daily by classmates causing fear and depression or another school child is bullied on social media to the point of suicide and parents and administrators are afraid to do what is right, our children are burn victims of our culture’s growing and continued incivility—in the world at large.
And that is only one example out of many. No one deserves abuse in any form; child or adult, man or woman. World governments and systems (civil and military) are overwhelmed, no longer able to fully protect its citizens with clear objectives and achieve positive “military” outcomes. If there are any objectives or outcomes, they are politically driven and end in death. The World is not the utopia we would like it to be or believe it is. A time is coming when control and manipulation by the elite, the powers that be, will put an end to chaos and fear and restore a false peace with its own form of fear and control at a cost: the complete loss of personal freedom. But no one will mind.
We may not even notice it when it happens because we are living it, not reading a history book about it. What can we do? Believe the truth and not the lie and stand firm.
In Matthew 11:27-29, Jesus said:
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
How do you come to Jesus? The Apostle Paul explained what this is about and how this is done:
Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes. But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:4, 8-13 NIV)
What does “saved” mean? Simply put it means that when you believe as stated above you are “saved” from death because you receive the gift of the promise—the gift of eternal life.
We may not even notice it when these things happen because we are living it, not reading a history book about it. Believe the truth and not the lie and stand firm knowing Jesus reminded us that
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. (John 14:27 NIV)
and the Apostle Paul told the Philippians and us
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:7 NIV)
Poet, Writer, US Army (Retired)
I dreamed of writing when I was a youngster. The love of books and writing may have helped to dull the pain of severe sexual abuse as I was sexually abused by two men at my father’s place of work from age 8 to 12 or so. I learned about this for the first time when I was 50 years old. So, as a boy, reading was the only place I had to go to. My fantasy world was better and safer than my real world. I loved reading and writing.
Reading books and writing poetry are a joy to me still and are an important part of my life. (See my About Me page on my blog for the complete profile.)
